For those who may not know, Ronald McDonald House Charities is an organization that builds living quarters for families who need a place to stay as their child goes through medical treatment at a nearby hospital. This housing is provided at little or no cost to the family of the child being hospitalized.
As stated on their website, the Ronald McDonald House in Boise has sadly been forced to refuse housing to eighty-two families in 2018 alone, and even more in 2019 thus far. Because of this tragic record, the Boise Ronald McDonald House has decided it’s time to expand.
The current Boise Ronald McDonald House can hold seventeen families. The beautiful new facility on 139 E. Warm Springs Avenue will have room for almost fifty families!
It will have forty-seven Guest Rooms for families of long term patients which will allow for privacy, peace, and quiet for the residents.
Several Private Day Rooms provide a basecamp for families of outpatients and those long days in and out of meetings and appointments with doctors.
A large dining room and kitchen are available so that the pressure of routine and day to day burdens of feeding a family are somewhat lightened.
Separate playrooms for younger children and teenagers help provide each age group space to be themselves.
Commercial appliances like washers and dryers make an enormous difference for both the residents staying in the House, and the staff that helps maintain the rooms, linens, dishes, and other household chores.
One of the best parts of the new House is the secret toy room.
Director of House Operations Mike Krause wanted to add a little extra excitement and something to uplift the spirits of children enduring such a difficult time. Normally, children in the house can choose a toy from a basket to take home.
Instead, Krause arranged for a secret room to be built between the House living room and dining room. It is filled with toys and then sealed up behind a door covered by a bookshelf facade. Each new family’s House tour will conclude with their children opening the secret room with the wave of a wand. They then can choose a toy to take from the secret room.
This fantastic new facility was designed by local Idaho firm Cole Architects; and Meridian based construction crew, Engineered Structures, Inc are currently working hard to make the dream come to life.
Currently, the project is on track to open January 2020.
Even though construction is off the ground and underway, Ronald McDonald House Charities can still use your help and your donations so that they can help even more families in need. Please consider donating to the charity by going here.
