In August of 2014, The Orpheum Theatre was purchased by Larry and Stephanie Johnson and Ovation Performing Arts. The theatre saw a six month major renovation with minor renovations following and still ongoing. The stage floor has been replaced and repaired to make it safe for performances, the sound system was upgraded, stage lighting was added, and the rigging system for curtains and stage lights have been brought to code. The area beneath the stage was completely reconstructed to include dressing rooms and a green room, bringing that area back to it’s original purpose once again. The balcony was reopened and spotlight towers were added to provide additional lighting for events. The basement level below the lobby were converted to technical storage, costume storage, and workshop space. Ovation Performing Arts now makes it’s home on the second and third floors; music offices and a classroom are located the second floor and a full dance studio is now on the third floor. Ovation Performing Arts offers lessons in dance, acting, and music to local students and community members in these spaces, transforming the Orpheum Theatre into a performing arts center.
The Orpheum Theatre now plays host to a large variety of events (as it did in it’s infancy), including live music, musicals, stage plays, opera, dance shows, private recitals, weddings, improv and standup comedy, seminars, conferences, charity benefits, and films. It officially reopened in December of 2014 with a live performance, and has been in full operation ever since. The theatre continues to be loved by the residents of the Magic Valley and sees new audiences weekly.
The restoration of the building is ongoing, as Ovation Performing Arts has made it their mission to restore the theatre to the original look and feel to the best of their abilities. The Orpheum Theatre continues to be a mainstay of Twin Falls, a look back into a different time, an escape from the trials and tribulations of everyday life, and a bit of big time glory in our wonderful small town.
