Winter in Idaho can be a beautiful and enjoyable time of year, but it can also pose challenges when it comes to staying healthy and active. Cold weather, shorter days, and inclement conditions can all make it difficult to maintain a regular fitness routine and support your overall health and well-being. However, with a little planning and creativity, you can stay healthy and active during the winter months in Idaho. Here are a few tips to get you started!
Find Indoor Fitness Options
If the weather is too cold or snowy to go outside, consider finding indoor fitness options. Many gyms and fitness centers offer a variety of classes, from yoga and pilates to spin and strength training. You can also find online fitness classes or workout videos to do at home. Some of my favorite Youtube workout videos are from Pamela Reif and Emi Wong.
Stay Hydrated
It’s important to stay hydrated year-round, but it’s especially important during the winter months. Cold weather can dehydrate the body, so make sure to drink plenty of water, herbal teas, and other hydrating beverages. Also, good chamomile tea can change your day!

Dress in Layers
When going outside for physical activity or just in general, it’s important to dress in layers. This will help you stay warm and comfortable, and allow you to easily adjust your clothing as needed. When exercising, wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating middle layers, and a waterproof outer layer to protect against the elements. Some of my favorite brands are Canada Goose, The North Face, and Patagonia!
Plan Outdoor Activities Carefully
If you want to enjoy the beautiful winter scenery and fresh air, plan your outdoor activities carefully. Check the weather forecast and road conditions, and let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return. Be sure to bring appropriate gear, such as warm clothing, water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. We want you to enjoy the outdoors but be safe while doing it!
Try a New Winter Activity
Winter is a great time to try a new physical activity or sport. Consider cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and even winter hiking which is my favorite. Not only will you get a good workout, but you’ll also have the opportunity to explore and enjoy the outdoors in a new way.
By following these tips, you can stay healthy and active during the winter months in Idaho. Remember to listen to your body and adjust your fitness routine as needed to support your overall health and well-being.
